Healthy Teeth, A Healthy You

We want our dentist to take care of all our dental health and oral problems.  But one, even if the best dentist, cannot solve all problems. There are different dental specialists who provide quite specific services, such as:

General dentist - deals with all kinds of common oral problems like extractions, fillings, cleaning of teeth. For other services, he or she can refer you to specialists.

Family dentist - specializes in family dentistry and provides similar services as a general dentist, the difference being that he or she treats patients from a wide age-group, children to adults.

Endodontist - concerned with the inner workings of the teeth, like root canals.

Orthodontist - specializes in taking care of tooth development and growth of teeth, jaws and face. The dentist also deals with protruding teeth, overcrowding of teeth, impacted teeth; and can install orthodontic braces and perform maxillofacial and oral surgeries.

Periodontist - mainly treats gum diseases or periodontitis; and performs dental implants, clean gums and teeth and do bone rafts.

Pediatric dentist - treats the oral problems of children, is knowledgeable about every aspect of dental care and is extremely kid-friendly, creating a safe environment for children to keep them coming back.

Cosmetic dentist - performs a variety of treatments, most of which is dedicated to helping the patient smile better. Procedures like veneers, invisible braces, bridgework, among others are performed.

Prosthodontist - specializes in building and replacing teeth by making implants, dentures and bridges.
After you have determined the kind of specialist you need for your dental problem, check for the following, where applicable:
  •          Does the dentist have a valid license or certified? How many years of experience?
  •          Is the dental office located at a convenient area?
  •          Are the staff members friendly and helpful?
  •          Is the dentist kind and ready to answer all your queries and makes you understand the procedure before performing them?
  •          Is the dentist certified to perform sedation on patients? Lengthy procedures can be completed with ease under sedation, and you will be able to sit through any painful procedure without any trouble.
  •          Does the dentist give valuable advice and suggestions on oral care (brushing, flossing)? Does he or she help patients choose the right dental products to keep mouth, teeth and gums healthy and disease-free?
  •          Is the fee reasonable?
